The newly established Sustainability Research Initiative (SRI) at ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ—a collaborative effort across colleges, the Research & Innovation Office, and the Provost—is seeking to build an advisory committee of 4-6 sustainability researchers who will help elevate SRI as a new initiative and serve as thought partners and impact amplifiers.

Advisors will work with the executive director to identify initial thematic areas and serve as connectors and ambassadors for the SRI across campus. Appointment selection will be based on a combination of factors to ensure the advisory committee brings together a diversity of sustainability research experience and engagement with the research community across campus. Advisors will meet with the executive director multiple times per month, and will be expected to both advise on and help execute some aspect of SRI’s initial strategy.

This is a one-year appointment compensated at a flat rate of $10,000 per year, under the “Faculty Director” job code. The opportunity is open to tenured or tenure-track faculty and research faculty currently employed by ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ. The appointments can be renewed for up to three terms, with each term following the academic year.

The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) has awarded $100,000 in combined funding to 20 projects through its Arts & Humanities Grant Program. Funded proposals span a wide range of disciplines—including Art, Music, Ethnic Studies, and Sociology—and reflect the depth and diversity of research and creative work at ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ.

The RIO Arts & Humanities Grant Program is inspired by recognition of the essential role of the arts and humanities at ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ, including inspiring deeper connections with others, welcoming multiple and diverse perspectives, and contemplating what it means to be human.

Applications for the program were requested by April 14 and subsequently reviewed and ranked by arts and humanities faculty based on the following criteria:

Significance/value of the project to arts, humanities and/or humanistic social sciences
Potential of the project to contribute to the field(s) (and potentially beyond)
Appropriate proposal for use of funds
How the project will impact the applicant’s career development
Appropriate evaluation to assess the project’s success
Qualifications of the applicant(s) and relevance of those qualifications to the project

The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) and New Frontiers Grant partners—the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and the School of Education—announced planning grant winners in the New Frontiers Grant Program, a novel initiative designed to foster new, interdisciplinary research directions for ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ.

The three selected projects seek to better understand and address some of society’s most pressing challenges by sparking the formation of diverse teams of research leaders and perspectives from colleges, departments and research institutes spanning the campus.

These New Frontiers Planning Phase Awards provide grants of $50,000 to each recipient. 

The teams were chosen through a competitive process that included eight in-person pitches, all by teams aiming to address important societal problems through broad, interdisciplinary approaches. Developing new research strengths for ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ, the program embodies interdisciplinarity by requiring teams to include two different colleges or schools and at least one institute.

“With last year’s cycle already producing exciting results, we are eager to see where these new projects take us as they further develop their approaches,” said Massimo Ruzzene, senior vice chancellor for research and innovation and dean of the institutes. “Each of these three interdisciplinary planning grant winners is exploring possibilities that push boundaries in their respective fields and represent significant potential for benefiting the public.”

New Frontiers in Physically-Grounded Geospatial AI for Understanding Complex Global Phenomena with Multi-Modal Data

PIs: Esther Rolf—Computer Science; R. Steven Nerem—Aerospace Engineering, Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES); Morteza Karimzadeh—Geography, Institute of Behavioral Science (IBS)

Team includes: Aerospace Engineering; Computer Science; Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES); Geography; Institute of Behavioral Science (IBS)

Project overview: Earth landscapes and phenomena are highly complex, making them challenging to model through physical models and data-driven approaches, which often fail to capture the complexity revealed by observations. Meanwhile, a new generation of geospatial foundation models powered by AI can identify complex patterns across vast earth observations but generally lack the integration of physical processes necessary to make them accurate and trustworthy for the sciences. This project aims to transform the representational capabilities of geospatial AI for the physical sciences.

Seamless Skin Integration of Brain/Body-Computer Interfaces for Cybernetic Human Advancement

PIs: Carson Bruns—ATLAS, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering; Grace Leslie—ATLAS, College of Music, Institute for Cognitive Science (ICS)

Project overview: Integrating technology with the human body provides transformative opportunities to overcome natural limitations, unlock new realms of cognitive and physical potential, and enhance wellness. However, limitations on performance, safety, convenience, size/weight and cost make these systems inaccessible and under-utilized for the public. For techno-biological interfaces to reach full potential to enhance the human condition for all, major transdisciplinary advances are needed to make brain/body-computer interfaces seamless, comfortable, long-lasting, affordable, safe and ethical.

New Frontiers in the Renewable Energy Transition: Mapping Technological and Social Dimensions of Geothermal Development in Colorado

Project overview: Geothermal energy is an underutilized resource that could play a significant role in Colorado’s energy future. Despite abundant resource potential, there are significant, yet poorly understood, technological and social barriers to increased deployment. This project unites ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ researchers across engineering, physical, and social sciences to form an interdisciplinary team poised to position the university as a geothermal leader.

What’s next?

The awarded teams will use the next year to further develop their projects, build their teams and conduct preliminary data collection to inform their efforts. Like the 2024 Planning Phase Grantees, teams will then compete for the single Launch Phase Grant of $200,000, which will be awarded in June 2026. 

A second round of the competition will solicit new ideas starting in January 2026.

Dr. Bethany Ehlmann has been named director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder. LASP’s mission is to advance scientific discovery and inspire the next generation through forefront research, innovation and education.

Ehlmann, currently a professor of planetary science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Director of Caltech’s Keck Institute for Space Studies, will begin her role as LASP’s director on September 1, 2025. Dr. Ehlmann will also hold the roles of Provost Chair in the Research and Innovation Office, Professor of Geological Sciences, and affiliate Professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences.

“We are honored to welcome Dr. Ehlmann, an accomplished scientist, scholar and leader, to the University of Colorado Boulder,” said Senior Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation and Dean of the Institutes Massimo Ruzzene. “Dr. Ehlmann's expertise and compelling vision will be invaluable for LASP as it carries forward ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ's legacy as a leading institution in the space sciences.”

“It’s an honor to be appointed to lead such a distinguished institution as LASP, with its long history of innovation in the space sciences,” said Ehlmann. “I’m excited to embrace this opportunity to work alongside LASP’s dedicated employees and leadership team to advance LASP’s mission and vision and to help guide this renowned institution into the future."

Ehlmann’s research focuses on water in the solar system, the evolution of habitable worlds, and remote sensing techniques and instruments for planetary missions. She is a science team member of multiple missions, including the Earth-orbiting EMIT imaging spectrometer; the Jupiter-bound Europa Clipper, which carries the LASP-built Europa Surface Dust Analyzer (SUDA) instrument; the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover; the Mars2020 Perseverance rover; and the upcoming ExoMars rover. She is the principal investigator of Lunar Trailblazer, a NASA small satellite mission to study water on the Moon that launched earlier this year. Previously, she was a science team member for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter CRISM instrument, the Dawn mission during its exploration of the asteroid Ceres, and the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

Active in science policy and outreach, Ehlmann is president of the board of directors of The Planetary Society. She served as a member of the National Academies Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey and the National Academies Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science. She is a fellow of both the American Geophysical Union and the Mineralogical Society of America, and has authored a children's book, “Dr. E's Super Stellar Solar System,” with National Geographic.

Ehlmann earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington University where she double majored in Earth & Planetary Sciences and Environmental Studies with a minor in math; two master’s degrees from the University of Oxford, in environmental change & management and geography; and master’s and doctoral degrees in geological sciences from Brown University.

“On behalf of LASP, I’d like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Ehlmann on her appointment and welcome her to our institute, where we look forward to working with her to deliver the future of space science,” said Frank Eparvier, associate director for science at LASP, who will continue to serve as interim director until Ehlmann starts.

The Distinguished Research Lectureship is among the highest honors bestowed by the faculty upon a ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ colleague. Each year, the Research & Innovation Office (RIO) requests nominations and a faculty review panel recommends one or more faculty members as recipients.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, June 16, 2025. Nominations should be submitted online.

About the lectureship

The Distinguished Research Lectureship honors a tenured faculty member, research professor (associate or full) or adjoint professor who has been with ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ for at least five years and is widely recognized for a distinguished body of academic or creative achievement and prominence, as well as contributions to the educational and service missions of ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ.

The selection of the Distinguished Research Lecturer is based on the research and creative record of the nominee as presented in the nomination application and as recognized by experts in the field.

Recipients typically present a lecture in the fall or spring following selection and receive a $2,000 stipend.

Eligibility

Nominees for the Distinguished Research Lectureship must be: tenured faculty member, research professor (associate or full) or adjoint professor who has been with ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ for at least five years; recognized nationally/internationally for scholarship, research and creative work; and highly regarded for contributions to ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ and its reputation.

Nomination procedure

Any faculty member may submit a nomination to the vice chancellor for Research & Innovation. The nomination’s supporting materials should include:

A statement (two to three pages) explaining the importance of the nominee’s research or creative work in his/her field and summarizing the research record
A current record of the nominee’s accomplishments or a current CV
A limited number of letters of recommendation (3–5) from experts outside ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ (as well as inside letters if appropriate)
If an applicant is not a recipient, the submission will remain in a pool of submissions for the following year. It may be appended as necessary before the next application deadline.

The University of Colorado Boulder and Raytheon, an RTX business, have announced a Master Research Agreement (MRA) that will pave the way to new benefits for the public through deeper research collaborations to benefit corresponding efforts at both organizations.

The agreement provides a framework for future research projects by providing parameters for research, academic and workforce programs designed to cultivate new knowledge, transformative technologies, and the workforce of tomorrow while deepening synergies across the organizations.

"The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, and partnerships like this one with Raytheon are critical to achieving that goal,” said Senior Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation and Dean of the Institutes Massimo Ruzzene. “In particular, this agreement will create new training, career development and workforce opportunities for our students. Together, we can drive breakthroughs, create new opportunities and make a lasting difference in the world.”

Raytheon and ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ have a long history of working together. This MRA will make those engagements even more efficient and impactful. Since signing the MRA, Raytheon has already begun to more actively partner with the ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ Center for National Security Initiatives (NSI) to explore areas of research collaboration important to national security. Raytheon is also supporting senior projects in the Ann and H.J. Smead Aerospace Department, mentoring students on aerospace projects with real-life parameters.

Master Research Agreements further solidify and expand long-standing relationships between ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ and industry partners in a variety of research pursuits, resulting in increased efficiency in proposal response, project award and post award administration for departments and institutes. Massimo Ruzzene, senior vice chancellor for research and innovation and dean of the institutes at the University of Colorado Boulder, has appointed Jane Zelikova to lead ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ’s Sustainability Research Initiative (SRI).

As executive director of the SRI, Zelikova will work closely with Vice Chancellor for Sustainability Andrew Mayock and engage with ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ’s vibrant sustainability community to guide the nascent initiative’s strategic direction to align with the university's overall sustainability research objectives. This includes cultivating key internal and external partnerships and securing external funding from government, industry, and philanthropic sources to support the development of innovative solutions through research, commercialization and deployment.

“Jane is well-qualified to help unlock the full potential of sustainability at ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ,” said Ruzzene. “��ý�Ļ��Ʒ has a longstanding legacy of pioneering sustainability advancements and technologies. Jane’s proven leadership and experience will help translate that world-class activity into new research and innovation opportunities for our researchers and students, new synergies across campus and with industry and academia, and a future in sustainability even more impactful than our past.”

Sustainability is at the heart of countless research and innovation efforts that span the campus. Researchers and students in virtually every department and in ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ’s 12 research institutes—from the arts to engineering to physics—tackle the world’s most pressing problems through innovative research, scholarship and creative works. Grounded in earth, environmental and ecosystem sciences, sustainability research draws from the natural, social, and engineering sciences, public health and humanities, as well as from policy, business and law.

By focusing on strengthening, integrating and expanding sustainability efforts across campus, as well as with external partners, ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ is uniquely positioned to be a global leader in sustainability research and innovation, workforce, climate action, energy transition, environmental resilience and values-based leadership. The launch of the SRI and appointment of its inaugural executive director mark key steps toward realizing ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ’s broader sustainability vision.

"Sustainability science and practice are more important now than ever and are key priorities for ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ and the state of Colorado.”

Zelikova joins ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ from Colorado State University, where she served as executive director of the Soil Carbon Solutions Center (SCSC) for three years. While leading SCSC, Zelikova established an interdisciplinary center to enhance the impact of soil and climate science, and fostered collaboration among experts from various departments and institutes at CSU, driving innovative research and engagement activities.

Prior to joining CSU, Zelikova spent four years as chief scientist at Carbon180, a nonprofit focused on carbon removal science and policy, where she helped launch the New Carbon Economy Consortium, developed the agricultural carbon removal program, and initiated an Entrepreneur in Residence fellowship. Zelikova also co-founded 500 Women Scientists, a global nonprofit dedicated to making science open, inclusive, and accessible.

Zelikova earned a PhD from the ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a B.S from the University of Georgia, Athens, Institute of Ecology.

The Sustainability Research Initiative (SRI) supports the university’s sustainability goals by fostering and coordinating research through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach that brings to bear knowledge from diverse academic departments, centers and institutes. The SRI is nested within the Research & Innovation Office.

Massimo Ruzzene, senior vice chancellor for research and innovation and dean of the institutes at the University of Colorado Boulder, has appointed Jane Zelikova to lead ��ý�Ļ��Ʒ’s Sustainability Research Initiative (SRI).
